Tionesta in Forest County is known as the “Gateway to the Allegheny National Forest” and the home of The Sherman Memorial Lighthouse located on a peninsula at the confluence of the Wild & Scenic Allegheny River and Tionesta Creek. The lighthouse was built in 2004 and stands 75-feet tall with a working light at the top and 76 stairs. It is the only working inland lighthouse in Pennsylvania. As visitors climb the 6 stories they will find items tracing the Sherman’s family heritage as well as a collection of lighthouse miniatures and artwork. Encircling the peninsula known as Lighthouse Island is a walking path that provides great views of the lighthouse. There is a free video of the lighthouse construction shown continuously in an adjacent, handicap accessible building. Self-guided tours are offered only three times a year for fundraising events benefiting the Tionesta Lions’ Club community projects.
