Counties in the Great Outdoors Region

The Great Outdoors Visitors Bureau promotes the Pennsylvania Counties of Cameron, Clarion, Elk, Forest and Jefferson.  In our region you can spot bald eagles, elk and other wildlife, and enjoy our two wild and scenic rivers and many sparkling lakes and streams.  You can visit our famous weather forecaster Punxsutawney Phil or go to all kinds of craft fairs and festivals.

More information on the counties that make up the Great Outdoors Region can be found below or by visiting our “Our Towns” section of the site.

Counties

Cameron

The scenic 75-mile Bucktail Trail travels through Cameron County.  This winding trail named after the famous Civil War-era Bucktail Regimen, meanders along the West Branch of the Susquehanna.  While on this beautiful driving tour, there are many stops and side trips along the way.  Three State Parks, Bucktail, Sizerville and Sinnemahoning are located in the county which all offer outstanding scenery, miles of tails and waterways and endless outdoor recreation.  Bring your camera and binoculars, as Cameron County is the home of numerous wildlife species, including Pennsylvania’s Elk Herd and Bald Eagle.  Fishing and Hunting are prime outdoor activities and Geocaching is plentiful.

Clarion

Home of Clarion University and the 1500-foot panoramic view of Brady’s Bend, a magnificent vista of the Allegheny River and a prime photographic site.  In addition to this view, Clarion County is the home of not only the Wild and Scenic Allegheny River, but also the Wild and Scenic Clarion River.  With two designated rivers within its boundaries, water recreation is plentiful.  Nearby communities host a variety of events throughout the year, including the famous PNC Autumn Leaf Festival, Peanut Butter Festival and others.  Beautiful downtown areas like Clarion and Foxburg offer a variety of shopping and restaurants. Foxburg and the Allegheny Clarion River Valley are where the American Golf Hall of Fame can be found.  Its’ golf course is the oldest course in continuous use in the United States.

Elk

Follow a trail of adventure into the rugged beauty of Elk County Pennsylvania. The southern gateway to the half million acres of the Allegheny National Forest with it’s 300 species of wildlife and 171 miles of trails. Lumber barons built their mansions in Ridgway, where the chips fly at the Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous in February. Visit St. Marys, home of the first Benedictine convent in the nation, where you can tour St. Joseph Monastery and join the nuns in prayer in the chapel. In the Johnsonburg/Wilcox area, sample fine Pennsylvania wines at an award-winning winery. Boat and fish East Branch Lake and take a family canoe outing on the “wild and scenic” Clarion River. Be sure to visit the largest herd of wild Elk east of the Rockies near Benezette, and don’t miss all the great events taking place all year round!

Forest

Far from the beaten path, in the heart of the Allegheny National Forest, lies a land without traffic lights where the wildlife roams free. Expand your outdoor adventure to spectacular Forest County. Explore two pristine rivers, the Allegheny and the Clarion, by kayak or canoe. Visit the ponds at Buzzard Swamp, an important link on the Atlantic flyway waterfowl migration route. Make the charming village of Marienville your headquarters for exploring more than 300 miles of snowmobile trails. In Tionesta, the 6.3 mile Tionesta Lake is a gorgeous spot for boating and fishing. Stay in a Victorian B & B, play an 18-hole golf course, see a rodeo at the East’s largest guest ranch, or paddle the 45 mile of the Tionesta Creek, on of the most scenic waters in the state. Tionesta is the future home of the Pennsylvania Hunting & Fishing Museum.

Jefferson

Stunning vistas and old growth forests await you in Cook Forest and Clear Creek State Parks.  The “Wild and Scenic” Clarion River is perfect for canoeing, kayaking and tubing for the entire family.  Superb hunting and fishing, quaint small towns, and a world-famous Punxsutawney Phil, all this and more awaits you in Jefferson County, part of the Great Outdoors region of Pennsylvania.  There are plenty of events, all year long to come and experience.  Celebrate the blooming of the state flower at the Laurel Festival, welcome in Winter at the Victorian Christmas Celbration and our Open House!
