Numerous opportunities present themselves throughout our winter wonderland. Scenic trails weave through gorgeous stretches of forest and along rivers and streams.  There are many well-marked, well-groomed trails for beginners and rougher, challenging courses for experienced skiers.

  • Mahoning Shadow Trail

    The Mahoning Shadow Trail stretches 15 miles along the corridor of the former Penn Central Railroad. The trail winds along the scenic Mahoning Creek for most of its course throughout the Punxsutawney area. The trail is designed for non-motorized recreational usage including bicyclists, walkers, runners, and cross-country skiers.

  • Mill Creek Trail

    Over 5 miles of open trail - no motorized vehicles allowed. Connects to Brush Hollow X-Country Ski/Hike Trails and also to the Twin Lakes Trail at Route 138. The trailhead is located east of Russell City, off Route 948 at FR143.
  • Minister Creek Recreation Area

    The Allegheny National Forest's smallest campground, offering 6 sites along Minister Creek. It's located on Rt. 666, 18 miles northeast of Tionesta. Each site contains a picnic table, fire ring, and tent pad. Vault toilets and hand pumps. Open all year. No reservations - the campsites are filled on a first come, first served basis.
