| J. R. R. Tolkien said, “Not all those who wander are lost.” And lots of folks have been having a great time wandering around Pennsylvania’s Great Outdoors lately because of the newest craze called “geocaching.” For those of you new this type of outdoor adventure, geocaching is a treasure hunt for the 21st century. First you need a hand-held GPS receiver (Global Positioning System), which is something akin to the navigation devices in newer cars. Then you set out in search of a “cache” at given longitude and latitude coordinates. A cache is most often a strong | box containing a small toy, CD, or trinket hidden by another geocacher. All caches contain a log to record your accomplishment. Some even have a disposable camera, so you can take your picture and leave it so the owner of the cache can record it. Most caches have a difficulty rating associated with them. Caches in the Wilds of Pennsylvania range from easy to very difficult. Since the PA Great Outdoors region covers six counties, the ultimate geocaching adventure would have you trekking through some of the most beautiful woodlands in the nation. Have your adventure during the day and stay |
overnight at one of the cabins, campgrounds, B&B’s or hotels. Log on to geocaching.com and type in the zip code of the area you want to visit. It will list all of the caches in the area. Some zip codes for the Great Outdoors region are: Brookville 15825 Emporium 15834 Clarion 16214 Sinnemahoning 15861 Clearfield 16830 Foxburg 16036 Cook Forest 16217 Emlenton 16373 DuBois 15801 Johnsonburg 15845 Marienville 16239 Punxsutawney 15767 Ridgway 15853 St Marys 15857 Tionesta 16353 |
